Overview
While some of the major gas countries have now committed to smart gas meter rollouts including the U.K., Italy, the Netherlands, and Ireland involving the deployment of over 50 million smart gas meters by 2020, most countries have yet to make a final decision or even consider the business case. Moreover, a variety of smart meter specifications and communication approaches are still under consideration, with final decisions on technology yet to be made.
"Despite the barriers to smart gas metering, mandated rollouts should drive collaboration among utilities, vendors, and other stakeholders, helping to build more cost-effective solutions and address challenges around interoperability and data security and protection," said Daniella Muallem, senior research analyst, IDC Energy Insights EMEA.
