On May 26, 2010, IDC Energy Insights held its fourth annual Energy and Utilities Forum. The first roundtable of the day addressed the hot topic of electric vehicles (EV) and their growing role in future sustainable and low-carbon economy. The roundtable was chaired by Roberta Bigliani (EMEA research director, IDC Energy Insights) and included as participants:

  • Andrea Zara, the Electric Mobility project manager of Enel

  • Gianluca Spitella, head of communication services at Federutility, the Italian federation of energy and water companies
  • Paolo Massari (Assessore all'Ambiente del Comunedi Milano), the City of Milan's environment counselor

Enel and A2A, the two utilities, are both working on separate emobility projects. They also signed agreements with automotive manufacturers to run EV pilot projects in 2010.

Roberto Malaman, general director of the Italian Regulatory Authority for Electricity and Gas (Autorità per l'Energia Elettrica e il Gas — AEEG), joining the conference as keynote speaker, also addressed the EV topic. He briefly described the main points of the new Italian resolution, regarding EVs, taken at the end of April, and outlined four different business models among the possible ones.

This perspective offers an overview of the main projects underway in Italy involving EVs, and provides a summary of main discussion points addressed during the roundtable. The report concludes with a summary overview of other European initiatives.
